Summary of the PAK vs SRI odi worldcup Match 2023 Highlights

Hey cricket fans, welcome to my blog where I share my thoughts and opinions on the latest matches and tournaments. Today, I’m going to talk about the thrilling encounter between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. This was the eighth match of the tournament, played at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on October 10th. If you missed the live action, don’t worry, I’ve got you covered with a detailed summary of the match, along with the key highlights, top scorer, and man of the match. So, let’s get started!

Pakistan won the toss and elected to field first, hoping to exploit the early morning conditions and put pressure on the Sri Lankan batsmen. However, they were in for a rude shock as Sri Lanka posted a mammoth total of 344/9 in 50 overs. The star of the show was Kusal Mendis, who smashed 122 runs off just 77 balls, hitting 14 fours and six sixes. He was well supported by Sadeera Samarawickrama, who scored his maiden ODI century with 108 runs off 89 balls. The duo added 203 runs for the third wicket in just 23 overs, taking the game away from Pakistan. Niroshan Dickwella also chipped in with a quickfire 51 off 61 balls at the top of the order.

Pakistan’s bowling was lacklustre and expensive, with only Hasan Ali showing some fight with four wickets for 71 runs in 10 overs. Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Nawaz, Haris Rauf, and Shadab Khan all went for over six runs per over, while Imad Wasim was the most economical with 22 runs in four overs.

Pakistan needed to chase down 345 runs to win the match, which was a record target for them in ODIs. They got off to a shaky start as they lost their captain Babar Azam for just 10 runs in the fifth over. However, they found their heroes in Abid Ali and Mohammad Rizwan, who stitched together a magnificent partnership of 224 runs for the second wicket. Abid Ali scored his second ODI hundred with 113 runs off 103 balls, hitting 10 fours and three sixes. Rizwan was even more impressive, scoring his fourth ODI hundred with 131 runs off 121 balls, hitting eight fours and three sixes.

The pair took Pakistan close to the finish line before Abid Ali was dismissed by Maheesh Theekshana in the 38th over. Rizwan followed him soon after, falling to Dushmantha Chameera in the 41st over. However, Pakistan had enough firepower left in their lower order as Saud Shakeel and Imad Wasim finished off the chase with 10 balls to spare. Shakeel scored an unbeaten 31 off 30 balls, while Wasim smashed 22 off 10 balls.

Sri Lanka’s bowling was ineffective and toothless against the Pakistani onslaught. They used seven bowlers but none of them could make an impact. Theekshana and Chameera were the only ones to take wickets, with one each. Pathirana was the most expensive, conceding 90 runs in nine overs.

Pakistan won the match by six wickets and registered their second win of the tournament. They also improved their head-to-head record against Sri Lanka in World Cups to eight wins out of eight matches. Rizwan was adjudged the man of the match for his brilliant century.
