England thrash Bangladesh by 137 runs in World Cup 2023

England continued their dominant run in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 with a convincing 137-run victory over Bangladesh at Dharamsala on Tuesday. The hosts posted a mammoth 364/9 in their 50 overs, thanks to a brilliant century from Dawid Malan and a fluent 82 from Joe Root. Bangladesh were never in the chase and folded for 227 in 48.2 overs, with Reece Topley claiming four wickets.

Malan’s masterclass

England opted to bat first after losing the toss and got off to a solid start with Jonny Bairstow and Malan adding 115 runs for the first wicket. Bairstow was dismissed by Shakib Al Hasan for 52, but Malan carried on his merry way and reached his second ODI hundred in style. He smashed 16 fours and five sixes in his 107-ball knock of 140, which is also the highest individual score by an England batsman in World Cup history.

Malan found an able partner in Root, who played a classy innings of 82 off 68 balls. The duo put on 151 runs for the second wicket and set the platform for a big total. Bangladesh fought back with some late wickets, as Shoriful Islam and Mahedi Hasan shared seven scalps between them, but England still managed to cross the 350-mark.

Topley’s terrific spell

Bangladesh needed a strong start to chase down the target, but they lost three wickets inside the first six overs. Topley struck twice in his opening spell, removing Tanzid Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan cheaply. Liton Das showed some resistance with a brisk 76, but he fell to Chris Woakes in the 17th over.

Mushfiqur Rahim tried to keep Bangladesh in the hunt with a fighting half-century, but he ran out of partners as England tightened their grip on the game. Topley returned to pick up two more wickets and finish with figures of 4/43. Mark Wood, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone also chipped in with a wicket each.

Malan was adjudged the Player of the Match for his superb century that set up England’s win. England are now at the top of the points table with two wins from two matches, while Bangladesh are at the bottom with two losses from two matches.
